Africa Utopia Festival at Southbank Centre
Africa Utopia is a month-long festival at Southbank Centre. It features African dance, music, literature and fashion.
Some of the artists who will be performing during this festival include:
- Baaba Maal – one of West Africa’s and Senegal’s best known and most exciting musicians.
- Béla Fleck – banjo virtuoso and 18-time Grammy award winner
- Oumou Sangaré – Malian diva and Wassoulou singer.
- Gregory Maqoma – South African choreographer and dancer Gregory Maqoma renowned for his artistry in blending traditional African Dance and contemporary dance.
Indeed, one of the highlights of the festival will be Gregory Maqoma’s stunning new show “Exit/Exist” which has been described as:
“A work of extraordinary depth and physical and musical deftness.” (ArtSpoken, South Africa)
He is joined by four South African singers and Italian guitarist Giuliano Modarelli. They perform songs by Simphiwe Dana, a singer and composer from Maqoma’s native province of the Eastern Cape.

And if you like to party then on Saturday 21 July there will be club night called “the ultimate Afrobeat Utopia” which is set to be an intense night of African Rhythms.
