FAMILY LEARNING OPEN WEEKEND (FLOW)

On 28th and 29th March 09 IRIE! dance theatre opened its doors at the Moonshot Centre to give taster music and dance workshops. Over 300 participants took part in Storytelling, Mask Making, African Dance, Drumming & Percussion and Caribbean Dance

Fusion workshops. All workshops (except mask making) were delivered by IRIE! tutors (Charles Maema, Charles James, Patricia Sahoua, O’Neil Pryce and Mohammed ‘Zozo’ Shuaibu).  Those attending on Sunday 29th also enjoyed a Caribbean Sunday lunch in a very relaxed and informal atmosphere.  The aim of this event was to bring families together to take part in fun and creative activities, introduce participants to the Moonshot community space and give them a flavour of IRIE!’s work. The majority of families attending were from the local community (Deptford and New Cross) as well as other parts of the borough and neighbouring Southwark. The response and comments from the FLOW weekend has been fantastic. All feedback and comments will be considered and we hope to plan creative community activities at the Moonshot in the near future.

DANCE YOURSELF FIT (ADULTS AND CHILDREN AGE 8+)

Back by popular demand!! After a successful 5-week run, which was supported by Lewisham primary care trust. IRIE! has decided to continue with these health promoting physically active classes.

Comments from participants:

“The tutor was very patient and made
lessons fun”

“My goal has been weight loss; I found the advice and exercise movements at Soca aerobics great and things that I could
continue to do at home in addition to my exercise workouts on DVD”

“A really enjoyable 5 weeks, excellent idea in having a ‘family’ event, 1.5 hours of aerobics [is] too long for children to undertake”

“Please continue the classes”

“My mum pays”
