Summer Program for Children - African Dance & African & Caribbean Drumming Classes

During the month of August, IRIE! dance theatre will be hosting classes in African Dance plus African and Caribbean drumming during August for children aged 5-7 years and 8-10 years at its base - the Moonshot Centre in Fordham Park.

The dance and drumming classes will be held on the 4, 11, 18 and 25 August.  There will be two (2) classes per day 10:00am-11:00am and 11:15am-12:15pm.

Ordinary school may be about the 3Rs; this summer program is all about the 3Es (or the 3Xs, depending on your point of view).

Through attending these special classes children will:

~ Experience different African dances.

~ Explore African and Caribbean culture.

~ Express different African and Caribbean rhythms.

And, on the 25 August, the children will have the opportunity to share what they have learnt in a special performance to which family, friends and other select guests will be invited. This is a highly successful format that IRIE! dance theatre has used repeatedly over the years and it’s always amazing just how much the children learn.

From our experience, children benefit in several other ways besides improving their dance and drumming skills and learning more about African and Caribbean culture and traditions.  This is an ideal short program to enrol your child or children onto if you’d like to see them:

~ Improve their self-confidence and self-esteem

~ Improve their communication skills.

~ Improve their ability to work effectively as part of a team.

~ Improve their focus and concentration.

Tutors

The African Dance classes will be taught by Charles Maema who is South African in origin and but who has embraced both London and IRIE! as home away from home.

As well as teaching community dance classes on behalf of the company, Charles Maema also teaches on the Dance Foundation Degree – a program which is a partnership between IRIE! dance theatre, City & Islington College and Metropolitan University.

The drumming classes will be taught by Zozo Shuaibu – an IRIE! dance theatre veteran.  He is one of IRIE!’s most sought-after tutors and he has an easy rapport with adults and children alike.  As well as being a Master Drummer is also renowned as a Story-teller.
