My MA Experience by Keisha Tonte Njoku

ree

After gathering such a wealth of practical movement experience on the BA Diverse Dance Styles, with IRIE! dance theatre graduating in 2023. I took a year to let it sink in and do my own choreographic faith-based projects. However, later I began thinking about how to communicate effectively and with more authority on the themes I was presenting.

Namely, building faith for healing through Christian urban and freestyle dance, which I present under the name Tonte Dance in a few different formats, teaching, workshops, dance films and choreography.

This hunger for knowledge led me to join the MA Diasporic Dance Styles with IRIE! Dance theatre, 2024-2025 cohort.

My highlights so far are meeting some amazing people and hopefully longer-term connections both personally and professionally, who have already taught me a lot, as we mostly work remotely. It’s great when we meet in person. The residency in the second semester gave us all the chance to do this as a few of us are International. This included a week of amazing physical dance classes, in depth academic discussions and learning about research and specifically from the indigenous worldview and delving into the meaning of diaspora.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to really challenge their thinking, make great connections and discover more about themselves and the wider industry.
